Rio de Janeiro / Brazil (Sunday, October 29,
2011)- The Arnette ASP World Pro Junior presented
by Quiksilver - -- Matt Hewitt has
endured a prolonged wait in Brazil to complete
the second leg of the ASP World Pro Junior event
- the Arnette Pro Junior. The best part about
the process is that hewitt is still in the mix
surfing his way into the final 16 surfers at
the event and the chance of picking up a victory.
Over the weekend Matt disposed of South African
surfer Berick de Vries in a high scoring match
up 13.43 vs 13.03. Hewitt stayed patient in
his heat and carefully selected the set-waves
and finished his two scoring rides with authority
to secure a berth into Round 4. "It was a super
close heat and I had watched the heat before
and knew the guys were getting there scores
on the bigger set waves," Hewitt said. "I knew
I just needed to be patient and wait for those
bigger ones and finish my waves." Hewitt also
enjoyed the change in venue from the left-hander
of Arpoador to Praia Do Diabo and tore apart
the tricky conditions on his forehand. "I don't
really mind too much," Hewitt said. "It's just
normal going left or right, but you can't really
complain when you get a right-hand point break
and it's kind of just reeling down the point."
Hewitt will face Marco Fernandez (BRA) in Round
4. Fernandez surfed the best wave of round 3
posting 9.33 out of ten on one wave.

The 2012 ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series got
under way this week with
the first event being held in the Philippines
and featuring three of New Zealand’s top junior
surfers. Alex Dive leads the way in the early
stages of the eight day event moving through
to the head-to-head round of 16 surfers.
Dive and Mitch Parkinson (AUS) left their fellow
competitors in their wake in the first round,
the pair battling it out for first and second.
Dive took the number one spot with a couple
of clean tubes and nice carves. "Pretty stoked
to win that heat, I’ve had a few heats this
year that didn’t go my way, so it’s great to
start off with a win," Dive said. "It’s been
small the last couple days, but it’s pumping
out there now. It’s great to get barrelled with
just 4 guys out.” The second round saw another
convincing performance by Dive – this time progressing
alongside Australian Noa Deane scoring 14.90
to Deane’s 14.60. Dive will be pitted against
local surfer Alipayo Philmar in his head-to-head
match up when he next competes. Having placed
15th overall on the 2011 ratings, Dive will
be keen to make this first event of the season
count as he enters the last year of his junior
career.

The competitive season has come to an end for
the New Zealand surfers on the Association of
Surfing Professionals (ASP) Australasian Pro
Junior Series with Matt Hewitt (Mount Maunganui)
narrowly missing out on qualification for the
World Pro Junior Tour - two places outside qualification
in sixth place. The final event of the year
took place in South Australia over the weekend
with Hewitt securing an excellent fifth placing
at the event. However, sitting in fifth place
going into the event and the cut off point being
the top four surfers on the ratings, Hewitt
was overtaken by event winner and Ryan Callinan
and third place getter Dean Bowen relegating
him to sixth on the ratings. It is a tough position
to be in for the young Kiwi surfer who was the
only surfer to win more than one event during
the series. "Pretty bummed, I did everything
I could this year and the last heat I surfed
was the same" said a dejected Hewitt while taking
some brief timeout back in New Zealand. "I thought
I got scored pretty low in my last heat but
there is not much you can do about that" reflected
Hewitt who also said that it took him a while
to realise that a fifth placing at the event
was a enormous result in itself. Hewitt fell
to Bowen on a wave starved final day of the
event in a heat that gave Hewitt limited opportunity
to get good scores the heat finishing 12.35
points vs 9.75 points. Hewitt was well aware
that the whole season was on the line for that
30 minute heat. "It was pretty serious, I didn't
really talk to him (Dean). He was focussed too.
If I made it I would have been in" said Hewitt
who now becomes a reserve in the case that injury
to one of the qualified surfers prevents them
from competing. Hewitt now heads to the United
States this week where he will spend the next
two months surfing, training and competing in
American waters. Alex Dive (Mnt) who finished
in 15th after his placing 13th equal result
at the event.
JUNE 2011
TRIGG
BEACH, Perth WA/Australia (Saturday, May 28,
2011) - Matt-Lewis Hewitt (NZL) won the Chill
Pro Junior presented by the City of Stirling
at Trigg Point, Perth today. This is the New
Zealander’s 2nd win on the 2011 ASP Australasian
Pro Junior Series. An unexpected pulse saw the
surf rise to a crisp, clean 3 foot (1.5 meter)
for the final day of the 2011 Chill Pro Junior.
The final was a clash of the titans with both
Matt-Lewis Hewitt (NZL) and Garrett Parkes (AUS)
dominating their Semifinal heats with big hacks
and massive airs. The stage was set for an exciting
Final and the boys didn’t disappoint, but it
was Hewitt who came bursting out of the gates
taking an early lead that he never relinquished.
“The final was tricky, the waves pulsed in the
Semis, but the wind came up and the waves stopped
in the Final,” Hewitt said. “You had to be smart,
it’s always tough against guys like Matt Banting
and Garrett (Parkes). You’ve got to be on your
game.” Hewitt has now leapt from 9th to 5th
on at ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series ratings,
and only one place away from a coveted spot
in the ASP World Junior Championships later
this year. “My goal this year was to qualify
for the ASP World Juniors so I knew I needed
a big finish,” Hewitt said. “It would be huge
for New Zealand to have someone compete at that
level and I’m doing all I can so it can be me.”

Matt hewitt and alex dive have been competing
in the chiko pro junior in newcastle over the
weekend and surfed their way to round of 16,
both surfers just missed out on the man on man
section which starts at the quarters, so a good
result for both guys.

What andy rides! 5`7``x 19``x 2 3/8`` this is
my small to medium size wave board` 2 to 4 ft`
this board is so fast with a full outline and
a wideish squish tail making a good paddler
and stable board, it has a low nose rocker but
a curvey tail curve with a deep single concave
through the bottom ,so you end up with a loose
fast board thats great for getting into waves
and will handle small waves but if it`s hollow
will handle a tube aswell. I`ve been developing
this board of the frist white bait I did for
nick white just over a year ago so is just a
on going thing.

Gisborne surfer Jay Quinn a world top 100 surfer,
won the Power Balance Pro at Mount Maunganui.Local
surfer and a stand out all weekend, Alex Dive
placed second in the final to secure his best
result at this level.
Dive,
a double finalist and winner of the Under 20
Men’s Division, scored 14.57 in the final and
was the only surfer within one scoring ride
of Quinn but still required a 9.0 point ride
to take the win.Alex Dive (Mnt) took a win in
the Under 20 Men’s Division after a flurry of
action that saw two surfers, Dive included incur
interference calls after getting tangled up
with their opponents. Dive finished with an
11.68 point total despite losing half of his
second scoring ride as a penalty for the interference.
Dive is splitting his time between Australia
and New Zealand focusing on the ASP Pro Junior
Series but is always stoked to come back home
and compete.
“It
is real good to come back and win, it will give
me some confidence, I haven’t won for a while”
said Dive adding “It is so much harder over
there (Australia) so hopefully I can keep the
momentum going and get some big results over
there.” Dive surfed a massive six heats on the
final day and by the time he got to the finals
he was “real tired” and simply “running on adrenaline”
to get to the podium. Alex Dive (Mnt) took a

gutted” said Dive of the interference. “I thought
it was pretty hard to come back from there and
I was gutted on myself, I thought the interference
could have gone either way but I got a 7 at
the end it and it was alright eventually.” Dive

Andy`s quiver:` This is
my small wave fun machine for waves 3ft under
but in saying that i have surfed it in 4ft soft
waves and
it went unreal. It`s 5`4``x 20``x 2 3/8`` the
bottom is a single concave to vee from the front
fins to the tail with a dble concave through
the fins. It`s rails are low to give it hold
and to give it abit of life, the outline has
curve in it to also give it some life in the
water. I first made it as a thruster and really
enjoyed the speed and the way it turned, It
would still get vertical and had a performance
feel to it, I then put some more plugs in it
to see how the 4 fin felt. It`s was faster with
the 4 fin but I found the turns wern`t has good
but thats just me so I`m back as a thruster.
This board has really open up my fun in that
size of waves as I can catch anything but do
turns at will. Fins size I found the best were
M7. This model comes in all sizes to suit you.
January 2011
Matt Hewitt has surfed
to a career best win at the first event of the
Australasian Pro Junior Series completed in
Australia overnight (5th January 2011). The
win is the first by a male Kiwi surfer at this
level since the domination of Maz Quinn in the
mid 1990s. The 19 year old surfer defeated good
friend and experienced ASP campaigner Dean Bowen
(AUS) in small windswept 0.5m surf at Jan Juc,
Victoria to claim the Championship Moves Pro
Junior title. "It's great to finally win one
of these events" said Hewitt. "They are tough
to win, all the surfers at this level are very
experienced and talented athletes and coming
into my last season , I was wondering if I'd
ever win one - now I have, I want more ... my
confidence is up and to win the opening event
of the season is ideal - I'll aim high from
now on."

Matt Hewitt Dominated
Day 2 of the Billabong Pro Junior New Zealand
MANU BAY, Raglan/New Zealand (Friday, May 14
2010) - Talented New Zealand 18 year-old Matt
Hewitt (Mt Maunganui) signaled his intentions
to make the most of his local opportunities
by blitzing the field in his high scoring round
two heat win at the Association of Surfing Professionals
(ASP) Billabong Pro Junior Manu Bay Raglan today.
Hewitt posted the events highest single wave
score with an 8.75 out of a possible 10 along
with the top scoring heat so far in the pro
junior men's division of 16 points for his top
two scoring rides (8.75 and 7.25) as he defeated
Australian's Tom Myers (NSW) and Max Longhurst
(SA).
Manu Bay, New Zealand,
Sunday May 16 2010:New Zealand’s Alex Dive (Mt
Maunganui) achieved his best ever performance
on the Australasian Pro Junior Circuit by making
the semi finals and eventually placing equal
3rd in the event. Dive lead for most of his
semi final but was overtaken in the final minutes
by Ryan Callinan with final scores at 13.85
to Dive on 12.65. “Disappointed losing that
semi in the last minutes but still it’s a great
result for me, the best I’ve achieved on the
Pro Junior Circuit” said Dive. “It’s given me
a lot of confidence knowing I can mix it at
this level and I’m setting myself up for next
season on the circuit. “Of all the events I’ve
surfed this season this one has produced the
best waves so it’s great to have an event here
at Raglan and I sure hope we can be here again
next year.”

: - - The last event for the 2009/2010 VQS Crustaceous
Tour was held at Raglan, New Zealand. Due to
small conditions on the point we were forced
to hold the event at the back beach, Ruapuke.
The conditions were small on the day, reaching
about 1-2 foot. Some say that is as small as
it gets, but there were still some contestable
waves all the same. The Pro Am division definitely
struggled in the smaller conditions, but there
were still some good waves to be had if you
picked the right one. Alex Dive looked strong
all day, picking off the waves and taking out
the win ahead of Daniel Kereopa (“DK”), Rangi
Ormond and Timmy O’connor.
Matt Hewitt picking up another
fifth placing on the ASP Australasian Tour ,
Matt Hewitt was the highest placed Kiwi finishing
fifth after being eliminated by Chris Friend
(AUS). The result has Matt ranked tenth with
the next event being the Billabong Pro Junior
at Manu Bay on the 13th of May.

to make the round of 32 but could not surf the
next round as he is, due to fly to Tahiti on
Sunday morning at 8am to contest the next event
of the Australasian Pro Junior tour. His main
commit is the Pro Junior tour. But what a great
result and some fantastic surfing. He finishes
off 17th!
Matt
is through to the round of 48 at only his second
WQS in the Burton Toyota Pro at Merewether beach
in Newcastle. Matt Matt surfed a great heat
this afternoon with in the man-on-man round

shared by Aussie Chris Salisbury and the USA's
Cory Arrambide (14.67), closely followed by

Alex Dive @ the Auckland champs: Alex Dive impressed
all day with his speed and vertical attack everytime
a critical section appeared. He claimed second
in the Open after previously dispensing with
all comers in the junior final. For Alex, it
was hopefully a prequel for how he will want
to perform at the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World
Junior Championship that will also be held at
Piha next month.
Well
done to Matt on another great result outside
of the water and pushing surfing out into his
community! As the paper said on Saturday night:
"Marvellous Matt: It's been a big year for national
surfing champion and Bay of Plenty Secondary
school sportsman of the year Matt Hewitt who

on the Australasian Pro Junior Series placing
17th at the Oakley Pro Junior held at North
Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Hewitt was eliminated
by Miguel Pupo (Brz) and Garrett Parkes (Aus).

Team Rider Matt hewitt has won his first natoinal
open title and 2nd in the under 18 as well.
Matt won every heat he contested except the
under 18 final and had the highest heat score
with a 19 out of 20 in the open semi.
Matt snapped his favourite board just before
his open semi so had to ride his backup board
which he had only ridden twice before, a 5`
10`` x 17 7/8``x 2 1/16`` single dble concave
squashtail with future fins.
The national finals of the Rip Curl GromSearch
were won by Alex Dive (Mnt) and Alexis Poulter
(Rag). Dive was the only non local to win a
division this weekend and he did so in fashion
with all his competitors requiring two massive
scores to catch him. The two surfers win entries
into the international final to be held in conjunction
with the Rip Curl Pro held at Bells Beach next
month
The new Under 20 Mens Division was dominated
by the local Mount Maunganui juniors with Matt
Hewitt edging out Alex Dive and Tim OfConnor
to take the win.
The lead changed several times throughout the
final with OfConnor holding on for much of the
heat. Hewitt came back strong with a string
of manoeuvres on one small righthander that
netted him 6.9 out of a possible 10 to jump
into the lead."
I was real stoked to take it out in front of
all my mates" commented Hewitt. It was
a real back and forth final. I had to build
on the six I got early in the heat and that
6.9 that I got did the trick but it was a close
one, especially against the three locals. Alex
Dive (Mnt) rode the very next wave after Hewitts
6.9 point ride. Requiring 6.8 points, he came
up agonisingly short scoring 6.65 which jumped
him to second place on 13.25 points, only just
ahead of Tim OfConnor on 13.10.
The three local boys did a good job on Sandy
Bay surfer and double finalist Paco Divers who
could only manage a 9.75 point total heat score
for fourth.
